There are a few breeds that like (or can get used to) water. Without looking at breed names, all you have to do is look for cats with little fur to figure out which one likes water. The thicker the fur, the less they like water!
That doesn’t mean most cats hate water or that, for example, Abyssinian cats love water. On average, cats with a thin fur coat can get in and out of water more easily than others. They can also get dry faster than other cats. That’s why they can handle water better.
Always remember that there are no universal traits when it comes to cats. Some cats with thick fur coats might love water just as much as their thin coated counterparts.
Do cats like getting wet?
Most cats can handle a little bit of water, some of them like getting wet – but you shouldn’t bet on that. Most cats avoid getting wet at all times and only go near water to drink up. Certain cat breeds have no issue with water, but they are a minority.
Whether your cat likes getting wet or not, it’s not something you should try unless you must. Cats either like getting wet or downright hate it. If your cat is more of a hating-water-kind-of-animal, getting it wet would put it on a terrible spot. Only try it if you have a reason to do so!
Why do cats hate water?
Most cats have a water-absorbing fur coat. That means, if they get wet, it’ll take a long time before they can be dry again. Hours, even! On the other hand, most cats didn’t grow and evolve near large bodies of water, which means they simply aren’t used to it.
At the end of the day, cats dislike water for practical or evolutionary reasons. Either way, they might hate it! Keep in mind your cat could love water, but it’s up to the cat to figure out whether there’s fun to be had in the pool or not.
How do I make my cat like water?
Exposing your cat to water early on is the best way to get it used to it. Most adult cats have never dealt with water, and that’s why they don’t like it. Even if you’re introducing a young kitten to water, do it slowly and with patience.
If you want your cat to be happy around water, work your way from small quantities of it to large ones. Start with a dripping faucet, then move onto big cups of water, and so on. Stop trying if your cat doesn’t want to get involved, though.
Should I make my cat take a bath?
Cats don’t need to take baths unless something bad has happened. Most of the time, cats will be able to groom themselves just fine without any help. If your cat has stumbled upon something nasty and needs a hand to get cleaned up, a bath might be necessary.
Before you decide to bathe your cat, it’d be prudent to do some research first and, if you can, talk to your vet about it. Bathing a cat is not an easy thing to do.
